I hope everyone had a slo-mo day, the kind you see in the movies or in a televised sporting event. Mine was extremely slo-mo, for physical reasons.
Thank you, Linda, for your reply. Linda said she liked reading about the behind-the-scenes process of doing my cartoons. Tonight’s Essential Cartoon is an example of choosing which side of the panel to place my characters for strongest punchline effect. I had learned that, since we English readers read from left to right, the funny part of the cartoon should usually be placed on the panel’s right side. So I first sketched out each possibility, changing the places of my 2 characters, to see which read the best, and which would be the funniest. I decided I liked the guy exiting off-panel right.
It’s quite a science, this comedy thing.
