Hola Night Owls & Early Birds
Just had an exciting thunder storm with lots of rumblings and electrical displays. A little rain with more expected later in the night.
Looking at my recent cartoons, and tonight’s in particular, I am trying to decide if I’ve been making my letters too large. It’s a funny thing to consider, since I’ve liked the larger letters because I believe it reads better. But if they are too big, then they might interfere with the cartoon’s composition. I know this isn’t Rocket Science, but as I continue to learn and practice, I try to be mindful of what works, and what begins to detract, or take away, from the overall cartoon. I’m also seeing if I like the thicker black border, which I used to do with past cartoons. And I keep experimenting with the Our Absurd Life logo, too. Right now, I’m diggin’ the “seal of approval” look.
I’ve also been spending time practicing the individual elements that will appear in upcoming cartoons. For example, today I practiced drawing and inking bags full of mail. I started off with different shapes like circles, squares, triangles and ovals to build the initial structure of the bag, and then fleshed them out. I have a cartoon idea in mind for Mother’s Day which I may use.
But that was an important reminder. To get better at drawing, it is important to do a study of an object, sketching it out a number of times. And then by inking it, I can work out the visual weight of the object with shading.
Lots to learn.
